If you’ve spent any time grinding early-game Terraria, you’ve probably heard of the Goblin Army event. It’s the only way to unlock the Goblin Tinkerer, one of the most useful NPCs in the entire game, and it drops tons of useful gear for new players. But a lot of new players get stuck figuring out how to spawn Goblin Army Terraria, because there are a handful of hidden prerequisites you can easily miss if you don’t know what to look for. This guide breaks down every step of the process, from meeting the base requirements to troubleshooting if the event won’t trigger, plus how to get the most loot once it starts.
How to Spawn Goblin Army Terraria: Pre-Requisites You Can’t Skip
Before you can trigger the Goblin Army, either naturally or with a spawn item, your world and character have to hit three non-negotiable requirements. Skip even one, and you’ll waste hours waiting for spawns that will never happen, or burn through Goblin Battle Standards for no reason. The core requirements are:
- You have defeated at least one Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu – this is the requirement 90% of new players miss. There is no way to spawn the Goblin Army before you beat your world’s first evil biome boss, even if you cheat in a Goblin Battle Standard.
- You have at least 200 health on your character. If you’re still running the base 100 HP you start with, the event won’t trigger, even if you meet all other requirements. You can boost your health by finding and using Life Crystals scattered around the underground.
- There is at least one NPC housed in a valid room on your world. The Goblin Army targets your permanent settlement, so you need at least one occupied, valid house for them to spawn to attack. It doesn’t matter which NPC it is, as long as their room meets all housing rules.
If you’re playing on Journey Mode, you can toggle event spawns in the menu, but you still have to hit these three prerequisites first to unlock the Goblin Army spawn option. Multiplayer worlds follow the same rules too – only the world needs to have beaten the first evil boss, not every player in the lobby, as long as the player triggering the event has 200 HP.
Two Reliable Methods to Trigger the Goblin Army Event
Once you meet all the prerequisites, you have two options to get the Goblin Army to spawn: wait for a random natural spawn, or use a crafted item to trigger it immediately. Which one you pick depends on how much time you have and whether you want to farm the event multiple times.
Natural spawns happen at dawn, right after the in-game night ends. There’s a 1/30 chance the event will trigger each dawn, as long as you’re on the surface layer of the world. The chance goes up slightly if you’re exploring the outer edges of your map, but it’s still completely random. If you’re in a hurry to unlock the Goblin Tinkerer, you don’t want to rely on this method, because it could take weeks of in-game time to trigger.
The faster, more reliable method is to craft and use a Goblin Battle Standard. To make one, you need 10 Tattered Cloth, 5 pieces of Wood, and access to a Loom. Tattered Cloth drops from Goblin Scouts, small enemies that spawn on the outer thirds of your world’s surface, only after you’ve beaten the first evil boss. Goblin Scouts only spawn after you beat the first evil boss, so don’t waste time looking for them before you take down the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu. I used to spend 20 minutes running back and forth on my world’s beach looking for scouts, until I realized using a Water Candle and Battle Potion cuts their spawn time in half, so I can get enough Tattered Cloth for 3 standards in 10 minutes or less.
Once you have the Goblin Battle Standard, you can use it anywhere on the surface or sky layer of your world to trigger the event immediately. You don’t have to be near your base, but it’s easier to fight the army if you’re close to your NPC houses and any pre-built arenas you have set up.
Common Mistakes That Stop the Goblin Army From Spawning
Even if you meet all the prerequisites and use a Goblin Battle Standard, there are a handful of common mistakes that can stop the event from spawning, and most new players run into at least one of them at some point. Knowing what these are will save you a ton of frustration.
The most common mistake is using the Goblin Battle Standard underground. The event only triggers if you’re in the surface or sky layer, which is any level above 0 depth on your map. If you use the standard below 0 depth, nothing will happen, and you’ll waste the item entirely. Always double check your depth before using a standard, especially if you’re building near the surface edge of a cave system.
Another common issue is having another active event running at the same time. If you’re in the middle of a Blood Moon, Pirate Invasion, Frost Legion event, or even a boss fight, the Goblin Army can’t spawn. You have to wait for the active event to end completely before you can trigger the Goblin Army, even if you use a Battle Standard. If you get the “A goblin army is approaching from the east/west” message but no goblins spawn, you’re likely too far underground – just teleport back to the surface and run towards the direction the message mentions, and the goblins will start spawning near you within a minute.
There’s also a hidden cooldown on Goblin Army spawns. You can only trigger one Goblin Army per in-game day, so if you just finished fighting one, you’ll have to wait until the next dawn to spawn another one, even if you have extra Battle Standards in your inventory. If you’re farming the event for loot, you can speed up the wait time by sleeping in a bed to skip the night.
Maximizing Loot and Rewards From the Goblin Army
The Goblin Army isn’t just a fun chaotic event – it gives you some of the most useful early-game rewards in Terraria, so it’s worth farming a few times even after you unlock the Goblin Tinkerer. Knowing what to prioritize will help you get the most value out of every invasion.
The biggest reward by far is the Goblin Tinkerer NPC. Once you defeat your first Goblin Army, he will move into any empty valid house you have available. He sells the Tinkerer’s Workshop, which lets you reforge weapons and accessories to get better stat modifiers, and combine accessories into more powerful combo items. He’s easily one of the most important NPCs in the game, so unlocking him should be your top priority the second you hit the Goblin Army prerequisites.
The goblins themselves drop a ton of useful loot too. Spiky Balls are the most common drop, and they’re incredibly useful for early game boss fights – you can lay hundreds of them down on the ground before fighting Skeletron or the Wall of Flesh, and they’ll deal passive damage the entire fight. You’ll also get pieces of the Goblin Armor set, which gives a solid 15% melee damage boost when you wear the full set, and the Harpoon, a ranged weapon that deals consistent damage and can hit multiple enemies at once. The goblins also drop a lot of coins, so farming a few invasions is a great way to make extra cash early on.
If you plan to farm multiple Goblin Armies, you can build a small arena near your base with dart traps and lava pits to take out most of the goblins automatically, so you don’t have to fight every single one manually. I always keep 3-4 Goblin Battle Standards in my inventory pre-Hardmode, because reforging accessories can get really expensive, and farming goblin armies gives me more than enough coins to cover the cost of getting perfect modifiers on my favorite gear.
At the end of the day, figuring out how to spawn Goblin Army Terraria is way simpler once you know the hidden prereqs and avoid the common pitfalls new players run into. You don’t need any fancy gear to beat the event, just a basic sword and a few platforms to move around on, and the rewards are more than worth the 10 minutes of fighting. Even if you don’t need the Goblin Tinkerer right away, farming a couple of these events gives you great early game gear and coins to make the rest of pre-Hardmode feel way less stressful. I still get a little giddy when I see that goblin army approaching message, because I know I’m one step closer to getting that legendary modifier on my favorite sword.
