Beating the Wall of Flesh is one of the most satisfying milestones in any Terraria playthrough, but the jump to hardmode can feel overwhelming if you don’t know which resources to prioritize first. One of the most critical mid-hardmode ores you’ll need to craft strong weapons, armor, and crafting stations is Adamantite, and many new hardmode players struggle to find it without running into high-level enemies that one-shot them. We’ve put together this guide based on hundreds of hours of playthroughs across all difficulty modes to break down exactly how to get Adamantite in Terraria without wasting hours digging or dying repeatedly.
Prerequisites to Get Adamantite in Terraria
You won’t find Adamantite anywhere in a pre-hardmode world, no matter how deep you dig. The first step to unlocking it is beating the Wall of Flesh to trigger the hardmode conversion of your world. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to use the Pwnhammer dropped by the Wall of Flesh to smash Demon Altars (in Corruption worlds) or Crimson Altars (in Crimson worlds) around your map. Each third altar you smash will spawn either Adamantite or its equivalent, Titanium, across the underground layers of your world.
You also need a pickaxe strong enough to break Adamantite blocks before you head out searching. Cobalt and Palladium pickaxes can’t cut through this ore, so you’ll need to mine enough of the first two hardmode ore tiers first to craft a Mythril or Orichalcum pickaxe. You cannot mine Adamantite with a Cobalt or Palladium pickaxe, so make sure you upgrade your tool first before heading out to look for it. We also recommend wearing at least Cobalt or Palladium armor to survive the harder enemy spawns you’ll run into in the deep underground.
Best Locations to Find Adamantite Veins
Adamantite only spawns in the lower Cavern layer, close to the boundary between the Caverns and the Underworld. On small worlds, this is usually around 1,200 feet below the surface, on medium worlds it’s around 1,800 feet, and on large worlds you’ll need to go down at least 3,000 feet to find consistent spawns. It’s more common the deeper you go, but you won’t find it inside the Underworld itself, so don’t waste time digging through Hellstone layers looking for it.
The easiest way to spot Adamantite veins fast is to use a Spelunker Potion, which highlights all nearby ore blocks in bright, easy-to-see colors. Spelunker Potions will highlight all nearby Adamantite veins in bright red, cutting down your search time by 70% or more. You can also check areas where you mined Hellstone pre-hardmode first, as Adamantite often spawns in the same general zones as old Hellstone veins. Try to avoid Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow underground zones at first if you’re undergeared, as these areas have far stronger enemy spawns that will interrupt your mining.
How to Farm Adamantite Safely and Efficiently
Once you know where to look, following a few simple rules will help you farm stacks of Adamantite in an hour or less, even if you’re still working with mid-tier hardmode gear. It’s easy to get distracted by rare items or random enemy spawns, but sticking to a consistent routine will get you the ore you need far faster. Here are our go-to strategies for safe, fast farming:
- Bring at least 3 Spelunker Potions, 2 Ironskin Potions, and a stack of Torches before you head underground. The Spelunker Potions last 5 minutes each, which is more than enough time to find 3-4 large veins.
- Dig horizontal tunnels at 50-foot depth intervals once you reach the lower Cavern layer. Adamantite veins are usually 4-8 blocks large, so horizontal digging covers far more ground than vertical digging for finding ore.
- Place a Bed and set your spawn point near the entrance of your mining area. If you die to a random enemy spawn, you won’t have to travel all the way back from your base to recover your items.
- Use a Mining Potion along with your Spelunker Potion to mine blocks 25% faster, so you can clear veins and move to the next one without wasting time.
You don’t need any fancy endgame gear to farm Adamantite, but a few quality of life items will make the process much smoother. A grappling hook or a simple mount will help you get across gaps and avoid lava pools faster, and a weapon with long reach like a sword or yoyo will let you clear enemies without stopping your mining flow. Never dig straight down when you’re near Adamantite veins, as you’re very likely to fall into a lava pool or a hidden enemy spawn that will kill you instantly. Each Adamantite ore smelts into one Adamantite bar when combined with 3 other ore pieces in a regular Furnace, so if you’re aiming for a full set of Adamantite armor, you’ll need around 240 total ore to get the 60 bars required.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Looking for Adamantite
A lot of new hardmode players make avoidable mistakes that cost them hours of time when they’re first trying to get Adamantite. The most common mistake we see is heading down to the Cavern layer too early, before they have a strong enough pickaxe to mine the ore. It’s easy to get excited to progress, but you’ll waste a lot of time if you can’t actually break the blocks once you find them.
Another common mistake is skipping buff potions because you think you’ll only be gone for 10 minutes. Hardmode underground has random spawns like Giant Tortoises and Wyverns that can fly through blocks and hit you for 60+ damage even if you’re in full Cobalt armor, so extra health and defense buffs go a long way. If you spawn Titanium in your world instead of Adamantite, you don’t have to start a new playthrough – Titanium is just as strong as Adamantite, but if you specifically need Adamantite for crafting recipes, you can create a new small world and mine it there in less than an hour.
Many players also skip over small 2-3 block Adamantite veins because they think they’re not worth the time. But these small veins add up fast, and if you collect every one you find, you’ll have a full stack of ore before you know it. Always smelt your Adamantite ore into bars as soon as you get back to base, so you don’t lose all your hard-earned ore if you die on your next adventure.
Getting Adamantite in Terraria doesn’t have to be a frustrating, time-consuming process if you follow the steps we’ve laid out here. As long as you meet the prerequisites, use the right buffs, and stick to safe mining practices, you’ll have all the ore you need to craft top-tier gear and progress through the rest of hardmode in no time. Don’t be afraid to adjust your strategy based on your world’s layout and your current gear loadout – every playthrough is a little different, and the best approach is the one that works for you.
