How to Get the Enchanted Sword in Terraria: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

If you’ve just started a new Terraria playthrough, you’ve probably heard other players rave about one of the strongest early-game melee weapons you can get. Learning how to get the enchanted sword in Terraria can cut down hours of grinding for basic gear, and let you take on the first three bosses without struggling through clunky, low-damage weapons. I’ve spent dozens of playthroughs testing the fastest ways to find this sword, and I’ve narrowed down the steps that work for both new and experienced players, no cheats required.

How to Get the Enchanted Sword in Terraria: Core Spawn Rules You Need to Know

Before you start digging randomly through your world, it’s important to understand how enchanted sword shrines work, because most players waste hours looking in the wrong places. Enchanted Sword Shrines are small, hidden cave pockets that feature a sword stuck in a stone background tile. Every pre-generated Terraria world has between 1 and 3 of these shrines, so you don’t have to worry about your world not having one at all.

Shrines only spawn in the outer two-thirds of your world, so you’ll never find one within 1000 blocks of your world’s spawn point. They also spawn between 100 and 500 blocks below the surface, in regular stone, dirt, or grass biomes, not in Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow areas. When you break the sword in the stone, you have a 20% chance to get a real enchanted sword, and an 80% chance to get a useless decoy sword that sells for 1 copper. There’s also a 10% bonus chance the real sword will be replaced with the Arkhalis, an even stronger fast-swinging melee weapon that’s perfect for close combat.

Best Methods to Find Enchanted Sword Shrines Fast

You don’t have to dig through every block of your world to find a shrine. I’ve tested dozens of methods over the years, and these are the ones that consistently cut down search time to 15 minutes or less on most playthroughs.

If you don’t mind using a pre-made seed, you can find dozens of public seeds that have an enchanted sword shrine within 50 blocks of spawn, so you can grab it within 2 minutes of starting a new world. That’s the best option for players who want to skip the search entirely, but if you want to play on your own random seed, these tips will help you find the shrine fast:

  • Dig horizontal tunnels 3-4 blocks tall between 200 and 400 depth in the outer edges of your world, 50 blocks apart from each other
  • Drink a Spelunker Potion before you start searching to highlight the sword shrine tile from 40+ blocks away, so you don’t have to check every cave you pass
  • Equip the Metal Detector accessory (dropped by rare Nymph enemies in underground caves) to get an alert when you’re within range of a shrine or other valuable loot
  • Avoid searching in Corruption, Crimson, or Underground Hallow biomes, as shrines almost never spawn in these areas and you’ll just waste time running through dangerous terrain

That means you don’t have to spelunk through random cave systems either. Horizontal tunneling is way faster, because you cover more ground in the exact depth range where shrines spawn. I usually dig 3 tunnels on each side of my world, at 250, 300, and 350 depth, and I find a shrine 9 out of 10 times before I finish the third tunnel.

What to Do If You Find a Fake Enchanted Sword Shrine

There’s no way to tell a real shrine from a fake one until you break the sword, so it’s common to find 1 or 2 decoys before you get the real thing. Don’t get frustrated if you break a sword and only get a useless decoy, it just means you’re one step closer to the real one.

If you’ve checked all 1-3 shrines in your world and only got decoys, you have a few backup options. First, you can cross reference your world seed with public shrine location databases to make sure you didn’t miss a hidden shrine, because they often spawn in small pockets you might skip over while tunneling. If you definitely checked all of them, you can try fishing for Golden Crates in any pre-hardmode body of water. Golden crates have a 2% chance to drop an enchanted sword, so you can fish while you wait for bosses to spawn or collect other resources. It’s slower than finding a shrine, but it’s a low-effort way to get the sword without more digging.

You can also get the sword as a rare drop from Arch Demons in the Underworld, but that’s way more dangerous for early-game players, so I only recommend that if you’re already exploring the Underworld for Hellstone anyway.

How to Use Your Enchanted Sword Effectively in Early Game

The enchanted sword is worth the grind for a reason. It does 24 base melee damage, and it shoots a flying sword projectile that doesn’t cost any mana, so you can use it for both close and long-range combat without needing to stack mana potions. The projectile travels up to 30 blocks, so you can hit enemies from safety when you’re exploring dangerous caves or fighting bosses without taking damage. It’s strong enough to take down the Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds, and Brain of Cthulhu without any other weapon upgrades, so it carries you through the first third of pre-hardmode.

If you want to make it even stronger, reforge it to the Legendary modifier if you have extra gold. That adds 15% damage, 10% speed, and 10% knockback, making it almost as strong as some early hardmode weapons. Pair it with melee damage accessories like the Shark Tooth Necklace or Warrior Emblem, and you’ll be able to take down Skeletron without upgrading to a Nightmare or Deathbringer sword first.

If you got the rare Arkhalis drop instead of the regular enchanted sword, you’re even luckier. It swings faster than any other pre-hardmode melee weapon, and it deals consistent damage to enemies right next to you, making it perfect for clearing out large groups of cave enemies or fighting close-range bosses.

You don’t have to spend hours digging through random caves to get one of the best early-game weapons in the game. Stick to the right depth range, use spelunker potions and a metal detector to speed up your search, and you’ll find a shrine faster than you think. Knowing how to get the enchanted sword in Terraria makes every new playthrough way less frustrating, and you’ll be able to breeze through early bosses and exploration without struggling with weak basic gear.
