If you’ve hit hardmode and started chasing those endgame mage builds or top-tier wings, you’ve probably asked how to get ectoplasm in Terraria at least once. This spooky, glowing resource is locked behind one of the game’s mid-hardmode gates, and a lot of players waste hours grinding the wrong areas or fighting the wrong enemies trying to get it. I’ve been there too, spending two hours running through the pre-Plantera dungeon wondering why I wasn’t seeing any Dungeon Spirits, so I put together this guide to help you avoid those same mistakes. We’ll cover spawn requirements, optimized builds, the best farming spots, and what to do with your ectoplasm once you’ve got it.
How to Get Ectoplasm in Terraria: Core Spawn Requirements First
Ectoplasm doesn’t drop from random enemies, and you can’t find it in chests or breakable blocks. It only drops from Dungeon Spirits, floating ghost enemies that only spawn under very specific conditions. The first non-negotiable requirement is that you have defeated Plantera, the jungle hardmode boss. No Plantera kill means no Dungeon Spirits, no matter how many dungeon enemies you kill. If you’re still not seeing drops after 10 minutes of grinding, double check you’ve actually beaten Plantera, as that’s the most common mistake new hardmode players make.
Once Plantera is defeated, every post-Plantera hardmode dungeon enemy you kill has a 6.67% chance to spawn a Dungeon Spirit. These enemies include Necromancers, Diabolists, Giant Cursed Skulls, and the biome-specific dungeon mobs tied to your world’s Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow spread. Dungeon Spirits have a 100% drop rate for 1 to 3 ectoplasm each, so your goal is to kill as many post-Plantera dungeon mobs as possible as fast as possible to spawn more spirits.
You don’t have to worry about difficulty level impacting drop rates either. Ectoplasm drops at the same rate on Classic, Expert, and Master mode, so you don’t have to crank up the difficulty to farm faster. That said, Master mode dungeon enemies hit far harder, so you’ll want better gear before attempting a farming run on that difficulty.
Optimized Ectoplasm Farming Builds for Every Class
The key to fast ectoplasm farming is clearing hordes of dungeon mobs quickly, so you’ll want to prioritize area-of-effect (AoE) weapons and spawn rate boosts over single-target damage. No matter what class you play, there are a few must-have items for every farming run:
- Water Candle + Battle Potion combo: Boosts enemy spawn rates by 50% and 40% respectively, cutting your total farming time almost in half. Just hold the Water Candle in your hotbar or place it on a block near your farming spot for the effect to work.
- Obsidian Skin Potion: Protects you from the dungeon’s random lava traps and burning spike blocks that generate in hardmode. I can’t tell you how many runs I’ve lost to a random lava pit I didn’t see hidden behind a wall, so don’t skip this buff.
- Movement speed boosting gear or modifiers: Lets you pull large groups of mobs together to kill them in one burst, spawning multiple Dungeon Spirits at once instead of one at a time. Wings or a grappling hook also help you navigate the dungeon’s uneven floors fast.
- Any AoE weapon matching your class: Even if you prefer single-target weapons for boss fights, swap to an AoE option for farming to clear entire corridors of mobs in seconds.
I usually run a mage build for ectoplasm farming, since the Razorblade Typhoon can clear entire corridors of mobs in seconds without me having to get too close to high-damage Diabolist attacks. If you play melee, the Vampire Knives or Terra Blade work great for clearing hordes and healing you at the same time. Rangers can use the Chlorophyte Shotbow with Ichor Arrows to melt groups of mobs fast, and summoners can use the Optic Staff or Pygmy Staff to auto-target enemies while you run around pulling more mobs.
If you’re playing with friends, split up to pull mobs from different corridors and then group them together for a single AoE clear. You’ll spawn far more Dungeon Spirits per minute than you would farming alone, and you can split the ectoplasm drops evenly between everyone.
Best Dungeon Locations to Farm Ectoplasm Fast
Not all parts of the dungeon are equal for ectoplasm farming. You’ll want to avoid small, cramped corridors or areas with lots of dead ends, since mobs will get stuck behind walls and won’t spawn as frequently. Look for large, open corridors in the lower half of the dungeon, ideally 10 to 15 blocks wide and stretching for 50 blocks or more. These open areas let mobs spawn freely, so you can pull 10+ enemies at a time for fast clears.
You can also do a small amount of prep work to make your farming spot even better. Clear out any spike traps or lava pools in the corridor, and place torches to light up the area so you can see incoming enemies. Don’t remove the dungeon background walls though, as mobs only spawn on natural dungeon walls. If you remove too many walls, you’ll cut your spawn rate significantly.
Most worlds will have parts of the dungeon converted to Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow after you beat the Wall of Flesh. All of these biome versions spawn post-Plantera mobs that can drop Dungeon Spirits, so pick the one you find easiest to fight. I prefer farming the Hallow dungeon side, since the Illuminant Bat and Hallow Skeleton enemies have lower damage output than their Corruption or Crimson counterparts. If you struggle with Giant Cursed Skulls, stick to the Hallow side to avoid them entirely.
Pro tip: Place a bed near the dungeon entrance to set your spawn point there. If you die during a farming run, you won’t have to run all the way back from your base to get back to farming. You can also place a chest near the bed to store extra ectoplasm and loot so you don’t lose it if you die later.
Practical Uses for Ectoplasm You Should Prioritize
Ectoplasm’s main use is crafting Spectre Bars at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. Each Spectre Bar requires 1 ectoplasm and 2 Chlorophyte Bars, and you’ll need these bars for some of the best endgame items in pre-Moon Lord Terraria. The most sought-after craft is the Spectre Armor set, which is the best endgame mage armor available before you beat the Moon Lord. The set gives massive magic damage boosts and a built-in life steal effect that lets you heal while casting spells, making it perfect for both boss fights and exploration.
Other high-priority crafts include Spectre Wings, which are one of the best pre-Moon Lord wing options in the game, with a 167 block flight height and fast movement speed. The Wisp in a Bottle light pet is also a fan favorite, as it follows you around and lights up even the darkest areas of the dungeon or Underworld without you having to hold a torch. You can also craft a Spectre Pickaxe with your bars, which is strong enough to mine Luminite after you beat the Moon Lord.
You only need around 50 to 60 ectoplasm to craft all of these high-priority items, so you don’t have to farm hundreds of stacks unless you want to build with Spectre Blocks or make multiple sets for friends. A lot of players overfarm ectoplasm and waste hours they could spend fighting other hardmode bosses like Golem or the Lunatic Cultist, so stop once you have enough for the crafts you want.
At the end of the day, once you know the right conditions and setup, learning how to get ectoplasm in Terraria doesn’t have to be a frustrating grind. Stick to post-Plantera dungeon runs, bring your AoE weapons and spawn buffs, and you’ll have enough for all your endgame crafts in under an hour in most cases. Don’t forget to clear out any traps in your farming spot first, though, I’ve lost too many good farming runs to a random spike trap I didn’t see hidden behind a wall. If you’re playing with friends, split up to pull mobs and then group them together for AoE clears, that will make the process even faster.
