If you’ve spent hours grinding for rare crafting materials in Terraria, you’ve probably hit a point where you’re searching for how do you get souls of light in terraria to craft mid-game gear, boss summoning items, or utility blocks. Souls of Light are one of the most versatile Hardmode resources, but a lot of new Hardmode players waste hours farming in the wrong spots or using inefficient methods. I’ve spent over 300 hours in Terraria Hardmode across multiple playthroughs, so I’ve tested every possible farming route to find the fastest, lowest-effort ways to stock up on these souls without pulling your hair out.
Where and how do you get Souls of Light in Terraria: core basics first
First, you can only get Souls of Light after you unlock Hardmode by beating the Wall of Flesh. Before that, the Hallow biome doesn’t even generate in your world, so there’s no way to collect these souls pre-Hardmode. Once you’re in Hardmode, you’ll need to head to the underground Hallow biome, which spawns after the Wall of Flesh is defeated alongside underground Corruption or Crimson biomes.
Souls of Light only drop when the enemy is inside an underground Hallow block tile, not just when you’re standing in the Hallow. That means if a Hallow enemy wanders into an adjacent Cave or Jungle tile, killing it there won’t net you any souls. You also need to be below the Cavern layer threshold, usually marked as 0 feet on your in-game depth meter, to get drops. Farming just below the surface of the Hallow won’t work, even if you’re standing on Pearlstone blocks.
Any regular non-boss, non-critter enemy killed in the valid underground Hallow area has a 20% chance to drop 1 to 3 Souls of Light per kill. That base drop rate is already pretty generous, but you can cut your grind time in half with a few simple spawn rate boosts that we’ll cover later.
3 tested Souls of Light farming builds for every playstyle
The best farming method for you depends on how many souls you need and what gear you have access to. I’ve used all three of these builds in different playthroughs, and each works reliably for different use cases:
- Low-effort pre-Mechanical Boss build: If you haven’t beaten any Mechanical Bosses yet and just need 40-80 souls for early Hardmode crafts, this build is perfect. Dig a 10x20 room deep in the underground Hallow, line the walls with Pearlstone to keep the biome consistent, place platforms across the middle, and light up every corner to stop hidden enemy spawns. Equip a basic ranged or melee weapon like the Amarok yoyo or Hellwing Bow, use a Water Candle and Battle Potion to boost spawn rates, and just stand on the platforms killing mobs as they spawn. This build gets you 50-70 souls per hour even with basic pre-mech gear, no fancy traps required.
- AFK farm build for bulk stockpiling: If you need 200+ souls to craft every Hallow-related item or farm multiple Hallowed Mimics, an AFK farm will save you hours of active play. You’ll need to build a trap system with lava or Dart Traps to kill spawned mobs automatically, a hoik system to funnel enemies into the trap, and a sealed safe spot 30-40 tiles away from the spawning area where you can stand without taking damage. Just make sure the entire spawning zone is underground Hallow, and you can leave the game running in the background while you do other tasks. This method nets you 60-90 souls per hour with zero active effort.
- Speed farming build for late Hardmode players: If you’ve already beaten all three Mechanical Bosses and have endgame mobility and damage gear, you can grind souls way faster by exploring large underground Hallow cave systems. Equip a high-damage area-of-effect weapon like the Terra Blade or Megashark with explosive bullets, pair it with an Ankh Shield and Celestial Shell for extra mobility and defense, and run through the caves clearing every mob you see. This method can net you 100+ souls per hour if you’re comfortable navigating large cave systems and don’t mind active grinding.
Common mistakes that slow down your Souls of Light grind
I’ve made all of these mistakes myself at some point, so avoiding them will save you a ton of wasted time. First, farming in surface Hallow: I’ve had runs where I wasted 2 hours farming surface Hallow before I realized I was too high up, so don’t make that same mistake. Surface Hallow enemies drop Pixie Dust and Unicorn Horns, but no Souls of Light, so you have to go down to at least 0 feet on your depth meter to start seeing drops.
Another common mistake is skipping spawn rate boosts. Water Candles and Battle Potions double enemy spawn rates, which literally cuts your grind time in half. You can craft a battle potion with Bottled Water, Blinkroot, and Moonglow, so you don't have to hunt for water candles in the Dungeon if you don't have one. Even if you only use one of these two boosts, you’ll see a huge difference in how many souls you collect per hour.
You also want to make sure no other biomes bleed into your farming area. If Corruption, Crimson, or Jungle blocks are within 120 tiles of your farming spot, mobs from those biomes will spawn instead of Hallow mobs, so you’ll get way fewer souls. You can fix this by lining your entire farming area with Pearlstone blocks to make sure the Hallow biome stays dominant, and remove any non-Hallow blocks within 50 tiles of the spawn zone.
What can you craft with Souls of Light, and how many do you need?
Most players start farming Souls of Light because they need specific early to mid Hardmode items, and you usually don’t need hundreds right off the bat. For a standard first playthrough, you’ll need between 40 and 80 souls for your first round of key crafts. The most common uses include Angel Wings, which require 10 Souls of Light, 20 Souls of Flight, and 25 Feathers, and are one of the first accessible Hardmode wing options for new players.
You’ll also need 3 Souls of Light to craft the Mechanical Eye, the summoning item for the Twins boss, and 20 Souls of Light to craft the True Excalibur, one of the two swords you need to make the Terra Blade, the best pre-Moon Lord melee weapon in the game. If you want to farm Hallowed Mimics for rare drops like the Daedalus Stormbow or Flying Knife, you’ll need 15 Souls of Light per Key of Light to summon them.
If you’re a completionist who wants to craft every Hallow-related item in the game, you’ll need around 200 Souls of Light total. It’s always better to farm a few extra souls during your first grind instead of having to come back later when you need 5 more for a random craft you forgot about.
At the end of the day, figuring out how do you get souls of light in terraria doesn't have to be a frustrating, hours-long grind if you follow the right steps. Pick the farming method that fits your current gear and how many souls you need, avoid the common mistakes that waste your time, and you'll have a full stack of souls before you know it. I've used these exact methods on every one of my playthroughs, and I never spend more than an hour farming enough souls for all my early Hardmode needs. Just remember to double check you're deep enough in the underground Hallow before you start, and don't forget those spawn rate boosts to cut your grind time in half.
